CFDA Launches New York Fashion Week App, NYFWList

New York Fashion Week Scheduling App Launches

by Pablo Avion

The Council of Fashion Designers of America is launching a new app to help fashion week attendees stay organized during NYFW.

The CFDA’s new, mobile-friendly web application is called the CFDA NYFWList.

The increasing popularity of New York Fashion Week — and the emergence of technology as a factor in events, on every level — has meant big adjustments within the industry. While IMG’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week continues to enjoy the undisputed leadership position, with the most visible series of events, each season still includes designers who aren’t a part of MB.

For example, the “smaller, edgier” series, MADE at Milk Studios has attracted major talent. And whereas in the past events, as a rule, always took place in Manhattan, that’s also no longer a given. This season, Alexander Wang opted to showcase in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard.

The increasing popularity of New York Fashion Week — and the emergence of technology on every level — has meant big changes.

Now, it should be said that apps already exist to help NYFW attendees stay organized. Most RSVPs (especially for shows at Lincoln Center) come through Fashion GPS, whose app GPS Radar leaves a bit to be desired. (And if you’ve ever tried to get help from their customer service people, you may find you’re out of luck.)

But to be fair, the GPS Radar app is also helpful for those needing to request samples, so it represents a more comprehensive solution (when it doesn’t seem to operate more like 2001-era Friendster, where elements seem to magically appear and disappear).

So the emergence of an alternative, “all-in-one” tracking solution is a welcome idea. Especially when shows can now be located anywhere around town.

In a way, the future of fashion week is beginning to look a little more like its past: at least in the sense of there being a pleasantly disjointed air about it. (We always recommend the documentary The Tents to anyone who wants a feel for what New York Fashion Week looked and felt like in a slightly earlier era.)

Paris Fashion Week is gloriously disjointed: although, granted, Paris is much smaller than New York, making the adjective “glorious” a bit more possible. But shows held in garden spaces, palaces and warehouse make for a varied atmosphere that seems a bit more conducive to creativity. On the other hand, we loved being at Lincoln Center for the ease and convenience. (See a show, grab a coffee, report from the laptop, see a show. I mean, that is true convenience.)

The new CFDA app aims to strike a balance, meaning greater flexibility as well as a much-needed cohesion for attendees.
